Charlie Madison, an American naval officer, has a gift for enjoying the comforts of wartime while steering clear of needless danger. In England, he falls for a pretty Englishwoman, but his easy way of life is threatened when a deranged admiral sends him toward a senseless and dangerous D-Day mission he is desperate to avoid.
