A Civil War veteran travels across the wild West, bringing news of the world to local townspeople. In Texas, he agrees to deliver a young girl, taken by the Kiowa people years earlier, to the aunt and uncle she does not want to go to. As they cross hundreds of miles together, the veteran and the girl face grave dangers while searching for a place either of them can call home.
