Inspired by the life story of Shields Green, Emperor follows an escaped slave whose path leads him north and into chance encounters with Frederick Douglass and John Brown. As he moves farther from the life he fled, his personal story crosses with two figures closely tied to the history of slavery, resistance, and the fight for freedom.
