In postwar Britain, Judy, a young painter, is engaged to Alan, a promising doctor, when Bill, an old friend and former love, unexpectedly comes back into her life. Her feelings are thrown into doubt, and she marries him, only for him to disappear and later be declared dead. After Judy remarries, the man she believed gone returns, desperate for money and ready to blackmail her.
