Loosely based on the criminal career of Frank Lucas, American Gangster follows a Harlem drug lord from La Grange, North Carolina, who builds a heroin smuggling operation using American service planes returning from the Vietnam War. As Lucas rises in New York’s underworld, an outcast city cop, Newark Detective Richie Roberts, is charged with leading the task force determined to bring him down.
